Pinkham Way waste site proposals

A new waste plant is planned as part of the North London Waste Plan at a site bordering Enfield, Haringey and Barnet. The proposals are being met with mixed reactions in the boroughs, outlined here.

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is putting together a planning application and has held public exhibitions, you can see next steps and links to the information here. They NLWA is responsible for the disposal of our rubbish and with North London being densely populated, you can imagine that there is a lot of it!

How waste will be disposed of seems unclear with some groups, such as the Pinkham Way Incinerator group suggesting that it will be incinerated while Bowes Labour claim that it will not be an incinerator, although they don’t say what it will be either, probably because the NLWA has yet to confirm this and is still seeking a company to provide the disposal method.

Enfield’s Conservatives admit they have concerns about the development and state that there is “uncertainty over the processes which will be carried out at the plant. These have not been decided yet by the NLWA, since it is still engaged in the bidding process with contractors.”

Meanwhile, neighbouring Haringey Lib Dems are seeking comments from residents about the proposals for the Pinkham Way waste plant and had over 400 responses in a couple of days.

Local residents in the boroughs have protested at planning meetings and been trying to confirm what is going on and how it will affect homes, roads and the local environment.

The Barnet Council website summarises the next steps well and for information about forthcoming events and decisions all in one place I recommend the Pinkham Way Incinerator pages. Another good site for information and to sign an e-petition against the proposals is Pinkham Waste, the site also tells you who you can lobby about the waste plant.

If you want to comment, find out more or get involved with a pro or anti campaign do get in touch or use some of the links in this post to get in touch with a certain group. My research suggests that the Conservative, Greens, Labour and the Lib Dems all have concerns about the site, but each standpoint  varies from borough to borough.
